Our favourite projects of 2022

December, 15 2022 IAS Admin

If you’re thinking about a new compressed air system or need a more efficient setup for your business, it can help to see some real-world examples first. So, to celebrate the year that’s been and get inspired for the next one, we’d like to share a few of our favourite 2022 projects.

For insights and ideas to get you started, we asked the Industrial Air Systems team to share their favourite projects. From robust air piping circuits to an oil-free compressor for a medical company, let’s see what they had to say.

Oil-free scroll compressor system for Orbis Diagnostics, Auckland

Based in central Auckland, Orbis Diagnostics manufactures lab-accurate, point-of-care diagnostic equipment to improve complex medical testing. When the team needed an oil-free air compressor, they reached out to Industrial Air Systems.

This project required a complete compressed air system with 100% air purity so we supplied a PneuTech oil-free scroll compressor, with Class 0 certification. We installed all of the air piping internally to optimise work surfaces and checked the whole system was leak-free before the walls were enclosed.

In case of more stringent air quality requirements in the future, we kept the base unit separate from the tank and dryer so that a desiccant dryer can be easily added. We also decided to install separate air receiver units that can be tailored to each application. This way, there is no need for an offload cycle.

One notable feature of our scroll compressors is the use of the Anest Iwata dry scroll air ends, which are being used by leading companies like Atlas Copco and SpiralAIR. By allowing users to control the unit on demand, less energy is required and running costs are greatly reduced.

Oil-free air is critical for medical applications so we were glad to share our expertise with the Orbis Diagnostics team. Being one of the first oil-free scroll compressors we installed, it was exciting to see this world-class unit in action.

Complete compressed air system for Jackson Holmes Contracting, Methven

Jackson Holmes Contracting is a trusted name in Canterbury, with a wide range of agricultural services including bailing, harvesting, cartage, and cultivation. When building a large workshop to service their fleet of vehicles, they needed a custom compressed air system from Industrial Air Systems.

After an onsite meeting with the client and workshop managers, our team was tasked with designing and installing a complete compressed air system. Given the capacity and service needs of the large workshop, our experts recommended an RSCR20PM rotary screw compressor, complete with a dryer, filtration, 150m ring main, and 13 droppers. We also piped air into the existing implement storage sheds, allowing the client to clean tractors and equipment as they return after each job.

The rotary screw compressor is a 20hp variable speed unit from our permanent magnet range, bringing power savings as high as 60%. By accurately matching air supply to demand, downtime is reduced to as little as 120 seconds. The 13 droppers are installed in strategic placements for each application, including 10 inside the shed and 3 with air reels in the exterior lean-to.

Alu Air piping & Vixen compressor for Campbell Contracting, Christchurch

Campbell Contracting is a Canterbury-based logging crew covering all aspects of logging and land development, throughout the region. With a large fleet of machinery on hand for all logging needs, an important part of day-to-day operations is ensuring that machinery is well looked after and maintained.

To service their vehicles and equipment, the client required a full ring main and a compressed air system. After a site consultation, we evaluated their budget and air requirements and decided the Vixen compressor was the most suitable solution. The PneuTech Vixen variable-speed compressor boasts the lowest lifetime costs when compared with equivalent models in today's industry. Other benefits include high permanent magnet motor efficiency, an energy-saving dual cooling system and unlimited starts/stops per hour.

The installation of the new compressor system was quick, efficient, and rewarding, allowing the Campbell Contracting team to get back to what they do best.
