Compressed air solution for Clayton Hops

Located in the hops-growing heartland of New Zealand, Clayton Hops is the country’s largest hops producer. In 2023, they reached out to us for a compressed air and nitrogen generation system for their new flagship processing facility.

Due to the increased demands on the facility, and the company's growth plans, a permanent and scaleable solution was required.

Overview

When the team at Clayton Hopps needed a compressed air and nitrogen generator plant for their processing facility, they reached out to our experts for help.

In March 2023, the setup was completed, featuring a complete in-house nitrogen generation and compressed air system. Now, this Tasman-based company has a state-of-the-art hops processing factory to match their top-quality product.

The client

Clayton Hops is the largest hops facility in New Zealand, located in the Tasman region. With 1,250 acres of crops, and a wide network of craft brewers and distributors, this family-run business focuses on quality, service, and innovation. 

They recently built the first hop pelletising, packaging, and cool-store facility in New Zealand. This enhances product quality and speed of delivery to their customers around the world.

The challenge

When building their brand new cutting-edge hops facility, one of the critical parts was a reliable source of nitrogen gas and compressed air for final packaging. Hiring gas manpacks was not an option because demand was too high – an onsite nitrogen generator was the only logical choice. 

After discovering our products online, Clayton Hops approached us for a quote. Our experts visited the facility multiple times to identify requirements, specifications, and site-based challenges. This required extensive calculations, assessing machine sizes, specifications, and flow rates.

The solution

With our attention to detail and the quality of our Pneutech products, the client decided our offering provided the best value compared to our competitors. We worked closely with the client to ensure all questions and queries were answered. 

 

The final setup includes a Pneutech 22kw Rotary screw compressor and a vertical air receiver. These feed into a Pneutech Refrigerated dryer and 3-stage filtration. From there, the main air supply flows into a Pneutech PN-GEN50 nitrogen generator, delivering up to 50m3/hr of gas at the required purity level.

The compressed air system is also regulated and supplies clean dry air to other areas within the packaging plant, including the building's fire detection system. All of these components were installed within the designated installation area, ensuring a tidy footprint and minimal disruption to the rest of the facility’s operations.

 

The results

With our in-house turnkey compressed air and nitrogen generation system, Clayton Hops have greatly reduced its energy consumption and power costs. Additionally, this tidy system requires less ongoing servicing and routine maintenance, saving them significantly over time.
