Maintenance tips for air compressor parts

March, 13 2024 IAS Admin

Every air compressor and its parts are subject to wear and tear, which is why regular maintenance is so critical. To ensure your compressor operates properly at all times, you must conduct regular maintenance checks and have spare parts ready as you need them.

In this article, we outline the key parts of an air compressor and how to maintain them effectively. We also cover how to source spare parts for your air compressor, should you need them.

Air compressor parts and how to maintain them

Below are the key air compressor fittings that you should be checking and maintaining regularly.

Air filters

The air filters are responsible for keeping the machine free of dust, dirt, water, oil aerosols, hydrocarbons, odours, and vapours. PneuTech’s huge range of filtration ensures every industrial application using compressed air is covered. From low pressure at 16 bar to full sterile and process filtration, PneuTech’s range is of the highest quality.

How to maintain your air filters:

  1. Replace filters every 1,000 to 2,000 hours of use.

Oil and water separator

The oil and water separator removes the oil from the condensate so the water can be safely disposed of in the stormwater system.

How to maintain your oil and water separator:

  1. Every 1,000 to 2,000 hours of use, service the oil/water separator.
  2. At least monthly, test the water quality.
  3. If a high oil concentration is reached before the normal service interval, change the filter cartridges.
  4. Treat condensate before disposing of it into storm-water drains.

Condensate drains

Drains are needed for separators, filters, and dryers to ensure all liquid condensate can be safely removed. Without the correct maintenance, failed drains may allow moisture to flow further into the system, overloading the air dryer and damaging end-use equipment.

How to maintain your condensate drains:

  1. At least once a month, check your condensate drains to prevent moisture from building up inside your machine.

Valves

The valves in a compressed air system are used to control the direction of airflow in various places within your system.

How to maintain your valves:

  1. Every month, check the drain valves and/or switch valves to ensure they are functioning correctly and allowing air to flow as needed.

Belt

In some compressors, a belt is used to drive the machine. Over time, the belt will loosen and impact the efficiency.

How to maintain your belt-drive compressor:

  1. Once a month, check and adjust the tension of the belt.

Air dryer

The air dryer is designed to remove moisture from the compressed air, achieving a higher purity level.

How to maintain your desiccant air dryer:

  1. Conduct a basic check every 3 to 6 months, including a check of the monitor dew point, switching valves, muffler, and desiccant.
  2. Conduct an additional check every 2 years, inspecting the related pre and post-line filtration elements.

How to maintain your refrigerated air dryer:

  1. Conduct a basic check every 1,000 to 2,000 hours of use, including a check of the drain valves, clean strainers, blow-out condenser coils, and suction pressure.
  2. Conduct an additional check every 4,000 hours of use, inspecting the airline filtration elements.

Spare compressor parts

Air compressor spare parts

When replacing parts in your air compressor, it’s critical to get genuine parts from a trusted supplier. This will ensure the parts are reliable and compatible with your system; it also ensures you are covered by warranties and servicing.

On the other hand, if you use non-genuine parts, you risk a loss of performance and efficiency, higher energy costs, risk of failure, and various hidden costs. When you look at the purchase price, it isn’t the only cost you have to pay.

At Industrial Air Systems, we have many common air compressor parts in stock and available at all times – ready whenever you need them. Our range includes:
