When faced with the challenge of meeting their high compressed air demands, Industrial Air provided a solution to ensure seamless operation and space efficiency.

You can take a look at the solutions we produced in this article.

Innovative containerised compressor for Domett Truck & Trailer

Overview

Domett Truck & Trailers Ltd faced the challenge of meeting high compressed air demand of 30 m³/min without a dedicated compressor room. By collaborating with Scott, the CEO, we provided an innovative containerised triplex compressor unit in a 40-foot container, ensuring seamless operation and space efficiency, similar to our nitrogen generator solutions.

The client

Domett Truck & Trailers Ltd is a leading manufacturer in the heavy transport industry, specialising in the design and production of high-quality truck and trailer units. Known for its innovation and reliability, Domett serves a wide range of clients requiring robust and efficient transport solutions. Its operations demand high volumes of compressed air for its manufacturing processes.

By providing a containerised triplex compressor unit, we addressed the need for a space-efficient and high-capacity compressed air solution, ensuring operations run smoothly without the need and capital expenditure for a dedicated compressor room.

The challenge

The existing machine, supplied by a competitor, was experiencing frequent breakdowns and high service costs. Ongoing maintenance costs were becoming uncontrollable, putting further strain on the budget.

Recently, Domett were presented with a proposal to rebuild its machine due to high operating hours. We identified that this was not a sustainable solution and instead recommended a permanent magnet VSD machine. This offers a short payback period in electricity savings, even when compared to the cost of just the compressor rebuild. Additionally, with the opening of a second hydrostatic paint booth to meet growing demand, their existing 75HP unit was no longer sufficient.

We evaluated all scenarios to achieve the required free air delivery. The options included:

  • Supplying one RSCR150EPM high-efficiency compressor to meet the output of 30 m³/min
  • Supplying two RSCR100EPM high-efficiency compressors for a combined total of 34 m³/min
  • Providing the package that was ultimately chosen.

Calculations were made considering carbon footprint, ongoing service costs, and redundancy. Additionally, during peak periods, they operate on a 24-hour shift but only at 25% production. It would be inefficient to run one or two large machines, as it would result in unnecessary energy consumption and increased running and service hours.

Domett values quality, seeking the same quality of workmanship on the equipment supplied to them.

Previously, Domett was an Ash Air client but was pleased with our response and the options we offered. Our in-house CAD team provided drawings of each proposed setup and we also provided testimonials, pictures, and videos of past container builds. Our Pneutech 10-year warranty also resonated with the owners as it was similar to the warranty offered by Domett.

The solution

Domett was referred to Industrial Air through a supplier in the trucking industry. Being able to see past testimonials, videos, and pictures helped the decision to work with us.

We provided prompt and comprehensive solutions to every question they had, ensuring the overall process was hassle-free. Our team was always available on-site as needed, ensuring smooth communication and efficient problem-solving throughout the project.

To ensure sufficient airflow for Domett’s operations, we provided a triplex system. The build was delivered full assembled, including excellent venting, ducting, and a side entry door. The connection to the blast and paint shed was made using 50mm and 80mm stainless steel Pneupress piping.

The container fitted easily next to the workshop, eliminating the need for a concrete slab and avoiding additional civil work expenses.

The results

By opting for an efficient new system, Domett avoided substantial costs associated with rebuild costs. The new system ensured a reliable and sufficient airflow, supporting their increased production demands without interruptions.

The containerised solution removed the necessity for a dedicated compressor shed, saving construction costs. This also ensured the entire plant could fit within the footprint of a 40-foot container, optimising the use of space. By implementing the triplex system, we also provided redundancy, ensuring continuous operation even if one compressor failed.

These improvements enhanced Domett's operational efficiency, reduced overhead costs, and minimised the risk of downtime. This contributed to a more robust and cost-effective production process.
