Overview

Building a new factory means making decisions that will affect operations for years to come. Hamilton Jet wanted state-of-the-art equipment with the best efficiencies for their new facility. Industrial Air Systems provided expert advisory support, detailed CAD drawings, and a customised compressed air package designed specifically for their requirements.

The client

Hamilton Jet is the world's largest waterjet propulsion manufacturer. With over 440 employees worldwide, they operate through a global network of three regional offices in Europe, Asia and the Americas, supported by 55 distributor partners.

Operating from their facility in Christchurch, Hamilton Jet's new brownfield factory represented a significant investment in their manufacturing capabilities and future growth.

The challenge

The new factory required a complete compressed air plant, and Hamilton Jet wanted to get it right from the start. They needed help with plant room layout and were specifically interested in VSD units that could deliver energy savings whilst handling varied air flow demands.

This wasn't just about purchasing compressors. Hamilton Jet needed a partner who could provide technical expertise in plant room sizing, equipment layout, and integration with other building services like ventilation ducting. The project would span a long timeline, from initial planning and consenting through to final installation.

The solution

Our in-house technicians created detailed CAD drawings for the plant room, using equipment 3D models and dimension specifications. We coordinated with other suppliers to ensure proper integration with ventilation ducting and building services.

Industrial Air Systems worked collaboratively with Hamilton Jet's service team throughout the planning and consenting stages, providing input on plant room layout and equipment sizing. We held pricing and stock over an extended period to support their ordering process.

The final package featured Pneutech VSD screw compressors with permanent magnet motors, selected specifically for their ability to adjust running speeds according to air usage and turn off during low-demand periods.

The results

The compressed air system delivered immediate operational benefits. The variable speed compressors adjust their running speeds based on actual air usage, turning off more frequently thanks to the permanent magnet motor technology. This translated directly into power savings and reduced service costs from day one.

Long-term benefits include ongoing energy efficiency as the compressors match demand in real time, reducing wasted energy during periods of lower production. The permanent magnet motors and VSD technology ensure the system operates at optimal efficiency across varying load conditions.
